Dr Karena Kelly is passionate about Māori language and grammar. Karena hails from the Northern tribes of Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Hine. She teaches within an array of Māori language contexts, including regional and national Kura Reo and provides Māori language tuition and consultancy to many organisations across Aotearoa. Karena is a lecturer at Victoria University in Wellington where she graduated with a Ph.D in 2015. She also graduated from Te Panekiretanga o te Reo (The Insitute of Excellence in the Māori Language) and is a certified translator with Toi Reo Māori through Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission). Karena has translated a variety of creative works by authors such as Homer, Apollinaire, Katherine Mansfield and Julia Donaldson. All of her translations of children’s books stem from a desire to have more quality Māori language books to read together with her young son, Asher. The translation of Dr Seuss’ Oh, the Places You'll Go is her gift to her son for his fifth birthday.
